'Ludacris,' who picked up a SAG and Critics Choice Award for Best Ensemble cast in the Oscar-nominated "Crash," turns in a powerful performance as Darius, a family member of Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola (Ice-T).

In taking a role on SVU, Bridges said, "I have been a fan of Dick Wolf's 'Law & Order' for a long time. When I was approached to work on SVU and read the script there was no way that I could turn down this amazing opportunity. The character was so rich and the storyline so complex that I knew it was something I had to do. The complex storyline puts Det. Fin in a difficult position, which pits him against his colleagues who suspect his son Ken (Ernest Wadell) in a double homicide. Fin also finds himself in a showdown with his ex wife Terry Randall (Lisa Gay Hamilton), Ken's mother. The story takes an emotional and unexpected turn when Fin discovers a family secret that sheds some new light into his family's relationship with Darius.

In the role of Darius, Bridges continues to tackle projects that are challenging and complex. Viewers and critics alike have embraced his film performances. He is the only rap music star to have such a successful and immediate crossover from music into film. He won a Critics Choice Award – "Best Ensemble ("Crash"); a SAG Award - Best Ensemble ("Crash") and he was a nominee for his first NAACP Image acting award for Best Supporting Actor ("Crash"). "Crash" and "Hustle & Flow" are only Bridges' second and third films. His first was "2 Fast 2 Furious," the blockbuster sequel to "The Fast & The Furious."

"Law & Order" star tunes in to Marvin Gaye movie

Hot on the heels of hit films about Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, a project about the final years of Marvin Gaye is set to begin production in May.

"Sexual Healing," an independently financed drama starring "Law & Order" cop Jesse L. Martin as the late Motown icon, will shoot in Hungary and Germany. Lauren Goodman will direct from her own script.

The movie chronicles Gaye's self-imposed exile in Europe after years of battling drugs, domestic issues and label headaches. There, he was rescued by a promoter who helped Gaye record his biggest-selling album, "Midnight Love," which yielded the monster comeback hit, "Sexual Healing".

Gaye's life was cut short the day before his 45th birthday in 1984, when his father killed him.

"More than just being the voice of a generation, Marvin Gaye proved to be its very heartbeat," Goodman said. "As a filmmaker, I was drawn to tell the story of a human being who was never fully realized, one with faults and foibles and an uncommon grace expressed every time he picked up the microphone."

Various producers have spent years trying to make a movie about Gaye. Originally, the project was intended to cover a larger portion of his life but was refocused on his final years because of rights issues with his Motown-produced records.

Music biopics are a hot genre these days with the success of 2004's Oscar-winning "Ray" and 2005's Oscar-nominated Cash movie "Walk the Line."

Martin most recently starred in the feature adaptation of the hit musical "Rent."

The latest new legal drama series from Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf ("Law & Order"-brand series) and NBC Universal Television Studio, "Conviction" is a fast-paced, character-oriented story focusing on the lives of young Manhattan assistant district attorneys and the challenging, emotional cases they confront.

Said Wolf: "Since 'Conviction' will be a 'character-cedural,' we will be dealing extensively with characters' back stories and personal lives. I am delighted with the extraordinary cast we have assembled, which will give the show depth and emotional intensity. "SVU" Episodes Mark First Small Screen Appearances for Acclaimed Actress

BURBANK - February 1, 2006 - Wolf Films and NBC Universal announced today that Connie Nielsen ("Gladiator," "The Ice Harvest") will fill-in for Golden Globe winner Mariska Hargitay on NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (Tuesdays, 10-11 p.m. ET) as the actress goes on maternity leave. The six episode run marks Nielsen's first primetime appearance on American television in her extensive film career.

"This is an unremittingly positive situation for us," said Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of the "Law & Order"-brand series. "I'm thrilled that Mariska is having a baby and thrilled that we have someone of Connie's obvious talent, beauty and stature to come in for these episodes. It doesn't get any better than this."

Nielsen's as yet unnamed character will be a multi-lingual warrants detective who comes from a specialized unit and is on a specific assignment to replace Detective Olivia Benson (Hargitay) who will be relocated "away from the building." Hargitay's pregnancy will not be written into the script.

Nielsen first gained international notice when she starred opposite Russell Crowe in the Oscar-winning Best Picture "Gladiator." The Danish actress most recently starred in the soon to be released film "The Situation" directed by Philip Haas; the acclaimed feature film "Brothers," where she was awarded the Best Actress prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival and won the Danish Oscar for Best Actress -- Newsweek's Best of the Year feature (12/19/05) hailed her "Brothers" performance as "one of the most emotionally eloquent performances of the year... it shows how Hollywood has just scratched the surface of her talent." Nielsen also starred in "The Ice Harvest."

Mariska Hargitay's pregnant pause is Connie Nielsen's gain.

The former Gladiator babe is set to step in for Hargitay on Law & Order: SVU when the latter goes on maternity in the coming months.

Law & Order mastermind Dick Wolf told the New York Post that Nielsen, 40, will play a warrant detective who joins the Special Victims Unit when Hargitay's Detective Olivia Benson is sent off on "specific assignment."

"When we realized we weren't going to be able to get through the season without explaining [Hargitay's pregnancy] in some way, the best decision was to have her dispelled, and Connie's name surfaced internally," Wolf told the Post.

Nielsen will star in six episodes of the crime drama, the highest rated of the Law & Order, franchise, leading up to the season finale.

Hargitay, 41, is expecting her first child with actor husband Peter Hermann this spring, though the exact due date is unknown. The couple met in 2002 on the set of the prime-time procedural when Hermann, 38, joined the show as recurring attorney Trevor Langen. The camera-ready couple tied the knot in August 2004.

Nielsen's temp gig isn't the first time a ringer has been brought into a Law & Order series for an on-hiatus regular.

Last year, Sopranos mobster Michael Imperioli took over for Jesse L. Martin in the final episodes of the mothership's 15th season. Martin briefly bowed out of his detective duties for the big-screen adaptation of Rent, in which he played Tom Collins, the same character he originated on Broadway in the early '90s.

Similarly, Chris Noth, who made his name as a detective on the original series, was hired last year for Law & Order: Criminal Intent to tag-team with star Vincent D'Onofrio, after the latter battled exhaustion.

The rest of the SVU gang follows in Hargitay's break-taking shoes in April, when the show goes on summer hiatus. The entire crew, including the future mama, resumes filming in July.

Some days it doesn't pay to get up. That's probably what Detective Robert Goren is thinking when three bodies are found, and he gets assigned the cases. Goren is voiced by Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays the character on television.

Whodunit?: In "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," you catch the criminal. (Legacy Interaction)

Like other games based on the "Law & Order" franchise, it's your job to lead the detective around New York City collecting clues, solving puzzles and interviewing suspects and witnesses.

There are several improvements in "Criminal Intent" over other games in the series. For starters, you have to solve multiple cases instead of just one. And there is no courtroom component here. It's your job to find the suspects, not to prosecute them. If you like the courtroom drama in the other games, you won't get that here, but you will have plenty of detective work to keep you busy.

The cases were written by writers for the television show and are very good in terms of plot. The three murders are seemingly unrelated. Spoiler warning: If you solve all three cases you are given a new murder that ties them all together in a bit of a twist ending.

You no longer have to pick what questions to ask suspects. Instead you choose the mood of Detective Goren, and he asks the questions. You can be flattering, intimidating, inquisitive or deceptive. Watching the suspect's reactions gives you a clue to how you are doing and lets you shift tactics during the interview if you think you've hit a wall. There are also many puzzles to solve, such as putting a torn-up note back together or opening a safe.

On the negative side, the game is very buggy and could have used another couple of months in development. The pathfinding artificial intelligence is horrible, one of the worst I have ever seen. Goren can't find his way around objects without a lot of help and sometimes gets stuck infinitely running into a wall. If you can forgive that, then the rest of the game is quite arresting.

NBC's revamped schedule offered veteran "Law & Order" producer Dick Wolf good and bad news. NBC is putting Wolf's new drama "Conviction," about young prosecutors in New York, on Friday's schedule starting March 3. But it is moving "Law & Order" up an hour to Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET — competing directly with ABC's blockbuster "Lost."

Wolf, who has had at least one show on NBC's schedule for 21 years, shrugged when asked about the move.

"It's like a long-term marriage," he said. "There are stresses and strains intermittently, but we are kind of stuck with each other."

With the "Thumbsucker" DVD coming out this week, D'Onofrio spoke to NEWSWEEK's Ramin Setoodeh.

NEWSWEEK: What was it like playing Tilda Swinton's husband in "Thumbsucker"?
Vincent D'Onofrio: Well, what was it like working with Tilda is the question. I loved it. You kind of feed each other and it rides to a higher level. She is the queen to me.

The queen of independent cinema?
To me, I don't think that way. I notice actors. I notice when their performance is outstanding.

What are you working on now?
I've got a film coming out in the summer called “The Break Up" with Vince Vaughn.

And Jennifer Aniston?
Yeah. Jennifer's in it, too. This is my third film with Vince. We know each other very well—we're like brothers.

I have a couple of them. "Full Metal Jacket" is always going to be right up there. Stanley Kubrick kind of started my career off. I was doing nothing but theater before then. I couldn't ask for a better set up than he gave me. I did a movie called "The Whole Wide World." I really liked playing that character.

That's embarrassing.

Why is it embarrassing?
It's a weird thing. I'm not over there. I don't know much about what goes on over there. It's always strange when my name comes up in the world over there.

What world?
The whole movie-making thing. I stayed out of it my whole career. I don't really get involved too much in it.

Why don't you get involved?
I do my own thing. I have a family. I don't go to any Hollywood events, ever. If they ask me to support the film that I'm in, I'll go to the opening—but only because I feel like I'm obligated to go.

Do you have celebrity friends?
I have a couple of friends. Ethan Hawke is a very good friend of mine. There are friends that I see every once in a while from back in the day—every once in a while, if I go to Hollywood—but they're not my best friends.

Is it easier today for smaller films to get made in Hollywood?
I don't think anybody knows what kind of movies should be made right now. I think that's why a lot of film actors are going to television. Independent films these days are financed if there's a star in them. But the film world is too confusing and outrageous. They're only using a handful of leading people and a handful of supporting people in every film it seems like. But it's good to know that every once in a while a good actor comes up and they pay attention to him. Like this kid, Jake ... what's his last name?

The odd one out in the Law & Order franchise has its second season come to DVD and rarely has any show been so much about one man. Of course, there are precedents for this - Columbo, Inspector Morse, Cannon and so on rarely gave much screen time to anyone but the titular detectives - but Criminal Intent owes so much to the personality of Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) that you struggle to imagine any of the crimes being solved were he not a member of the NYPD.

Indeed, it is Morse that Goren resembles most - both are extremely bright, although Goren works only in homicide, both bear the greater intellectual burden in their partnerships and both appear to have a certain misfortune in their personal lives. And yet they differ in that Goren has none of the lofty pursuits of Morse, with apparently no love of opera, ale or crosswords. In that sense, he's not particularly well defined - we learn, for example, that Goren spent some time in the Armed forces and that he has a particular fascination for numerology and the flimsy connections between names, dates and places that we take for granted but which Goren often uses to unlock a case. It is, then, often fascinating to watch Goren begin to make sense of the murky world in which a murder has been committed but unlike those cops whose soul often turns as black as the murderers they meet with every case, Goren takes a certain childish pleasure in each investigation. Often this appears as his teasing of the suspect - a winding-up or a getting under their skin as we might say - such as his pawing of the rare and vintage sports cars in Cherry Red, in which he gets to manhandle Ferraris in a way that one never should. Similarly, there's a lot to enjoy in his adoption of a different character to force the suspect to admit their guilt, at times it's a slightly camp confidant to a dear old murderer, occasionally a geek with an interest in wordplay and technology or even a conspiracy nut with a predilection for military uniforms. And yet, when I say 'force', there's never the sense that Goren, despite his size, is particularly threatening, more that he understands that by allowing temptation to fall in the way of a suspect that they will admit their guilt. In the case of Baggage, it's knowing that the suspect falls easily for attractive and successful women, in Chinoiserie, it's Goren's understanding of the suspect's childhood in China that closes the case whilst in Cuba Libre, it's the paranoid fantasies of a man recently released from prison that has the detective realise who's guilty and who has simply been used.

Much like the moment in Petrocelli when the replay of the crime scene within the courtroom would point the finger at the guilty party or in Columbo, when the shabby detective would explain what he knows and how the crime was committed, it's more fun, say, than enlightening when Goren, often in the last five minutes of an episode, pulls the case together. Oftentimes, an episode ends in a location no more glamourous than a police interview room but such is the grounding of Criminal Intent in the Law & Order franchise. Despite it being completely unlike Law & Order (the original series) and Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent is still firmly part of the family, with Dick Wolf's guiding hand being felt throughout. Goren may well be the star of the show and of each investigation but, like the other series, he's supported by a justice system that includes not only fellow police officers - his partner, Detective. Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) and department head Captain James Deakins (Jamey Sheridan) - but also District Attorney Ron Carver (Courtney B. Vance), who's often as intransigent and as unwilling to go before a judge as his colleagues in Law & Order and Special Victims Unit. Of the main cast, it's Eames that softens Goren's more analytical edge, teasing him a little, as in the episode Probability, as well has giving the show more humanity. Without her presence, it would be like watching Morse without Lewis and as that show needed Lewis' fumblings, his chaotic home life and his often wide-of-the-mark misunderstandings of Morse's intentions, so too does Criminal Intent need Eames. As much as it often appears to be solely about Goren, I doubt if it would be quite as enjoyable without Eames.

Of course, the downside of the show is that by watching it too much, one can see the moment that Goren has the cut of the case all too clearly, almost, but not quite, flagged with the sight of a light bulb going on above his head. In Cold Comfort, for example, Goren's realisation of the motive and the likely murderer comes with a canny question, a pause and a smile so broad that you know he's worked out the case and in giving that much away, that he's effectively named the guilty party to the audience as well. Over the entire season, this does become a little predictable but as much as there's an episode like that, there's also one like A Person of Interest, in which Goren is blamed both by the press and by the courts for the suicide of a suspect before realising that a woman from his past may have set him up following his earlier investigation of her in Anti-Thesis.

Such occasional twists are most welcome but it's not really what the show is about, more that Criminal Intent is simply about Robert Goren figuring out how a crime was committed. There's none of the even-handedness of Special Victims Unit's team, none of the equal emphasis of Law & Order on the police investigation and the trial and none of the personal conflicts felt by the detectives and District Attorney's in both of these other shows, simply Goren figuring out whodunit. If that's enough, and there's been plenty of Criminal Intent on Five over the past year, including this second season, to have whetted your appetite, then this may well be on your To Buy list. Personally, I think that Five tend to show enough Law & Order and CSI to never have to bother with actually buying one of the sets on DVD but that clearly isn't the case for everyone.

LOS ANGELES - Reality TV they are not, but two hit shows are so convincing as imitations of life in the criminal justice system that some legal experts worry they're distorting the expectations of real jurors.

The influence of the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Law & Order" franchises has permeated American law. Lawyers ask would-be jurors whether they watch the shows and then change strategies depending on the answers. Law schools maintain video libraries of the programs as teaching tools and even analyze the plot lines in class.

Which side benefits the most — prosecutors or defense attorneys — is debatable. While "Law & Order" glamorizes prosecutors, "CSI" can set standards for the infallibility of forensic evidence that prosecutors can't often meet — a science-solves-all formula that millions of viewers may bring to jury service.

There is no debating, however, one clear, very widespread result of these programs: The justice system is now facing what legal experts call, "the CSI effect," a TV-bred demand by jurors for high tech, indisputable forensic evidence before they will convict.

"These programs have a potential for great mischief but also for great learning," said Laurie Levenson, a Loyola University (Los Angeles) Law School professor who discusses "Law & Order" in her classes and whose school maintains a library of episodes.

"CSI" dominates network rankings for CBS with versions set in Las Vegas, Miami and New York, while "Law & Order" and its spinoffs are an NBC stalwart. Both occupy many hours each day on cable. A single first-run episode of "CSI' can draw 26 million viewers while a "Law & Order" episode averages 11.4 million. Multiply that by spinoffs and cable reruns, throw in other crime-based series, and there's a virtual world of crime-show junkies who could end up deciding guilt or innocence in real trials.

"The expectations of jurors are more elevated," said Elissa Mayo, assistant lab director for the California Attorney General's Bureau of Forensic Services. "They think that we have all the space-age equipment that they see on TV and before you come back from the commercial break you have the results."

In response, scholarly law journals have included articles suggesting that prosecutors warn jurors at the outset that it can be very difficult to obtain forensic evidence and that circumstantial evidence is sufficient to prove a case.

The problem is that many cases have little forensic evidence, notes Michael Asimow, a UCLA law professor who teaches a course on law and popular culture.

"Shows like 'CSI' are teaching people that without forensic evidence you can't convict anybody," said Asimow.

In Baltimore, for example, less than 10 percent of homicide cases in the state attorney's office in 2004 involved fingerprint or DNA evidence. Evidence, instead, often was circumstantial or reliant on eyewitnesses.

In one case, an 11-year-old girl pointed at a defendant and said, "That's the man who shot my father." But jurors found him not guilty. One later explained: "I would have liked to see some evidence, like finding the gun with fingerprints."

In last year's murder case against Robert Blake, prospective jurors were asked whether they could fairly evaluate evidence prosecutors contended would show the former tough-guy actor killed his wife.

"Oh, that's easy," said one prospect. "I'll just go by the DNA."

A prosecutor informed the potential juror there might not be DNA evidence — and as the case played out there was none. Forensic testimony focused on a smattering of gunshot residue and blood spatter and the claim that police mishandled evidence — an issue stressed in Blake's successful defense by attorney M. Gerald Schwartzbach.

Schwartzbach acknowledged that jurors probably were more receptive to his hours of laborious cross-examination on scientific details because of their exposure to TV forensics shows — though he dismisses those shows as "electronic relatives of tabloid journalism.

Hollywood's take on forensics is what millions of viewers get each week as they watch pistol-packing sleuths peer at bloody crime scene evidence and get the bad guy thanks to technology. The fact that a forensic expert with a gun could possibly contaminate evidence doesn't bother Ann Donahue, executive producer and co-creator of "CSI Miami."

"What we're doing is entertaining," she said. "It's like a medical show. When you go to the hospital, you're not going to find that doctor you see on TV."

Dick Wolf, who launched the "Law & Order" franchise 16 years ago, traces his show's roots to a pitch he made to the late NBC chief Brandon Tartikoff for a program based on "the front page of the New York Post."

"And that's still it," he says, "'Headless body found in topless bar' is still a great story."

The "Law & Order" series frequently offers thinly disguised dramatizations of high-profile cases. But Wolf says the shows are more than mere entertainment.

"I think we have raised people's awareness of how the justice system operates, how evidence is obtained, the conflicts between cops and prosecutors, why evidence is excluded that the jury never gets to see," he said.

Defense attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr., who won acquittal for Michael Jackson on child molestation charges in a case with almost no forensic evidence, said he rarely watches "CSI" or "Law & Order," but doesn't object to jurors being educated by TV.

"I think we're better off if the public understands what techniques are available," Mesereau said. "I have great faith in American juries and I would like to think that they know a lot of these shows are pure fantasy."

But sometimes that fantasy does alter the reality of a case.

Last year in Texas, the conviction of Andrea Yates in the drowning deaths of her five children was reversed because of an error involving "Law & Order."

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz, a key prosecution witness and one-time consultant for the show, testified that an episode in which a woman drowned her children in a bathtub aired before the Yates killings.

Prosecutors suggested Yates concluded from that episode that she could get away with the murders.

However, it turned out, there was no such episode and Dietz has admitted he was mistaken.

In reversing Yates' conviction, an appeals court said his testimony could have affected the judgment of the jury.

Another "edge of your seat" episode. A young child is abducted just feet away from her school, sending Detective Stabler and Medical Examiner Warner on a dangerous hunt for the kidnapper. Upon finding the "getaway van" the kidnapper was driving, blood is discovered. After testing the blood, it is determined it belongs to that of Carly, the kidnapped girl. Time is of the essence, as it is discovered the child has Leukemia and treatment is absolutely necessary in order for the child to survive.

The kidnapper contacts the parents, demanding a ransom in exchange for the child, insisting no police are to be involved. Making a snap decision, ME Warner contacts Detective Stabler. He along with other detectives are smuggled into the apartment. A meeting is scheduled with the kidnapper to make the "money drop'. ME Warner meets the kidnapper with the bag, and a happy ending seems just around the corner. Wrong. A security guard comes out, causing the kidnapper to panic and run once more with the child.

After careful examination of the tire prints left, the detectives are lead to the remote garage where the child is being kept. Barely alive, she's transported to the hospital and is stabilized. Upon interviewing the child, they're lead straight to the kidnapper. Her older, drug addict brother, Daniel. While interviewing the children's father at the bank, Daniel comes in, demanding the vault emptied. His father realizes it's his son, begging him to stop. A confrontation occurs when he discovers Detective Stabler is in the premises. Shots are fired. Daniel's father is shot. He takes Detective Stabler hostage and attempts to leave, only to find himself surrounded by New York's Finest. Seeing no way out, and his father dying before his eyes, he decides to shoot himself out when he's shot in the leg by ME Warner, ultimately saving his life and that of his father. An episode not for the faint of heart. One of Tamara Tunie's greatest performances.
